We are a small farmette in Calvert County, MD.

Achterberg Acres is a small-scale farm operated by two beginning farmers. We produce a wide variety of organically grown produce, plant starts, table eggs, pork, poultry, and other value added products on 4 acres of woodland and 1 acre of leased pasture. We use regenerative practices that mimic nature to keep our soils healthy while protecting the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

As beginning farmers, we both started this operation without any farming background or experience. We gained our skills through testing and researching and continue to learn more everyday. Oftentimes, our ideas failed, but that just made the success much more magical. The vision of eating healthy and sharing this with our community became the opportunity of a lifetime when we were able to purchase a 5 acres lot in the spring of 2020 after years of searching.

Two years later, we lease 1 acre from a neighboring farm. We have worked the land, are starting to understand its nuances and are ready to grow.

  • Table Eggs

    The Maryland Egg law requires all eggs sold in the state meet standards for safety, quality, labeling and weight. Everyone selling eggs, even small backyard producers, must comply with it. The law is designed to ensure that Maryland consumers have wholesome, high quality eggs.

  • Poultry

    To process poultry on the farm, you must meet the MDA requirements for the poultry/rabbit slaughter certificate. This certificate verifies that we complied with the poultry and rabbit harvest requirements set forth by MDA, passed the test associated with the class, and our labels have been approved.. That means we can process the poultry that we raise on the farm. It also means that we met the requirements to safely safely store all of our meat products for retail sales.

  • Honey bees

    Maintaining healthy honey bee colonies is very important because they are susceptible to many diseases and parasites.

    Maryland Law requires everyone who keeps bees to register their colonies within 30 days of first obtaining a honey bee colony and then annually thereafter. It’s easy!

  • NPIP

    All sellers of live poultry and hatching eggs in Maryland are required to participate in the NPIP program. This program monitors the health of your flock and provides certification through regular testing. It also limits the likelihood of introduction to disease into your flock through purchasing of health-certified birds.

  • Hatching Eggs

    You must have a permit to sell live poultry or hatching eggs in Maryland. There are testing, sanitation, and record keeping requirements for selling live poultry or hatching eggs. The objective of this permit is to prevent the spread of poultry diseases. We do not have this certificate yet, but we are working towards it!
